You must be wondering what is windows 32 bit and 64 bit. What role it plays with the computer. How does the performance vary when windows 32 bit or 64 bit is installed.
Lets begin with the process step by step to understand what are these bits, and how the performance of the computer vary when windows 32 bit or 64 bit is installed.
What is a bit.
A bit is nothing but a binary digit that is the smallest unit of information in computers. A bit consists of only one value i.e.. 0 or 1. The combination of 8 bits is referred to as a byte, which are usually meant to store data.
What role does windows 32 bit or 64 bit play with the computer.
These days you will find two types of processor (CPU).
- 32 bit processor
- 64 bit processor
And two types of windows version.
- windows 32 bit
- windows 64 bit
What is a 32 bit or 64 bit processor.
In a processor (CPU) the number of bits refer to the size of data that it can handle, and the size of its registry. The type of processor a computer has effects its overall performance. A 64 bit processor is capable of accessing over four billion times as much memory than a 32 bit processor. The difference between a 32 bit and 64 bit processor is that the number of calculations per second they can perform. When it comes to 32 bit processor the maximum amount or random access memory (RAM) that it supports is upto 4GB. And when it comes to 64 bit processor the memory amount it supports is over 4GB.
Windows 32 bit or 64 bit operating system.
You are familiar with the concept (what is a bit) and (what is a 32 bit or 64 bit processor), now according to what processor (CPU) you have (32 bit or 64 bit) you need to choose the windows version.
What windows version is compatible.
32 bit windows version
If you have a 32 bit processor (CPU). Then you must install a 32 bit windows version as well as 32 bit application programs for your computer. If you try installing 64 bit windows version and 64 bit application programs then your processor will not support it.
64 bit windows version
If you have a 64 bit processor. Then you can install 64 bit windows version and you can use both 32 and 64 bit application programs. Or you can choose to install a 32 bit windows version but in this case you can only use 32 bit application programs.
How to determine if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit processor.
To find out what bit is your processor, follow these steps.
Click on the windows button and in the search field type system information. It will show you system information icon, click on it.
After you click on the system information a window will open that will show what bit is your processor.
How to determine whether the windows is 32 bit or 64 bit
To find out the windows version simple right click on my computer and click on properties. A window will open that will tell you what bit is windows operating system.
